This Engineer's Autobiography Offers Inspiration and Encouragement
I started my professional career in India studying civil engineering and my studies took me around the world to Alaska, a tale I recount in my inspirational new book "The Determination to Succeed." For anyone interested in reading an intriguing and motivational engineer's autobiography, I offer my story. I hope you use it as a tool to inspire others and as a guide to help you follow your dreams.
About Dr. Arvind Phukan
My dreams began in India, where I studied to be a civil engineer and then I progressed to a doctorate degree in Geotechnical engineering in London (U.K.). Further Post-doctorate Fellowship took me to Quebec City, Canada. Then, six years of Consulting Engineering works in Toronto, Vancouver and Sudbury, Canada from where I was invited to a major pipeline project in Alaska (USA). After completion of the pipeline project, I joined the University of Alaska, Fairbanks as Associate Professor of Civil Engineering for six years. Then I moved to Anchorage as Professor of Civil Engineering, School of Engineering, University of Alaska, Anchorage (UAA), USA. I continued in this position for fourteen years when I took early retirement from UAA to focus on my consulting business.
I was Author of the first educational text book of its subject matter “Frozen Ground Engineering”, Published by Prentice Hall, 1985 and Co-author of four other engineering books including 100+ publication of technical articles at various Engineering journals and conferences as well as research reports to state and Federal agencies. I was selected from Alaska as one of the twelve delegates from throughout USA under US President Carter’s scientific cultural exchange program related to “Building under cold climate” between the U.S. and U.S.S.R (now Russia) in April, 1979. The selected group, including me, went to Lenningrad by train on December 5th 1979 after all delegates arrived in Helsinki, Finland for orientation. I was consultant on various projects located in USA, Canada, Russia, Norway, Japan, Lithuania and India. Assam Down Town University, Guwahati (India) conferred on me Doctor of Science (D.Sc) Honoris Causa at the second Convention held on the 4th day of September, 2015. After that, I wrote this inspirational book for engineers in the hope that it will inspire others to dream big and form positive habits which they can follow to success. I feel that mistakes are a part of learning and success requires them. But the trick is to keep trying and have good mentors to rely upon. More than just a “professional engineer bio,” I hope that this will be a motivational book for engineering students.
